Cazando leones - Hunting pumas

Cazando leones

Hunting pumas
At the far western end of lake Viedma, at the very foot of Mt. Fitz Roy (the majestic peak El Chaltén), a handful of Scandinavian and Finnish pioneers arrived at the beginning of the 20th century, like modem Vikings, in search of a future and freedom. Struggling against the harshness of the environment and the isolation they settled there, making a living rearing sheep.
As an authentic specimen of his valiant lineage, here is Arvid Elias Westerlund (1896-1938), bom in Vórgo (Finland), with a trophy of his struggle for survival, the huge puma that was decimating his flocks.
Arvid married Edith Sofía Roskivist and left offspring, but he died young and his ashes were scattered on what was his property, the estancia 'Sofía', in the valley of the river Guanaco, to the south of lake Viedma.

-----------
the tittle in Spanish (substituting the common local usage of the word "leones" for "pumas") is a reference to Madsen's book "Cazando pumas en la Patagonia", c/f p.38 "The self-styled pioneer".
