El 29 de mayo de 1921 a las 11 horas y 35 minutos, desde el Club Hípico de
Punta Arenas, decolaba un biplano iniciando un raid programado hasta la ciudad de Río Gallegos.
La máquina era un S.V.A. 6 A Ansaldo, de fabricación italiana, de estructura de madera y tela. Estaba equipada con un motor de 200 HP y alcanzaba una velocidad máxima de 200 km/ hora.
Esta era piloteada por Mario Pozzatti, un ex piloto militar del ejercito italiano, y por Osear Friedly, también piloto, que oficiaba de mecánico.
Las crónicas de la época nos informan que la aeronave, bautizada "Magallanes", sobrevoló el estrecho homónimo hasta San Gregorio, luego enfiló hacia Sección Frailes (en Estancia Cóndor) y finalmente, después de un vuelo de 1 hora y 44 minutos de duración, se convirtió en el primer avión que aterrizó en suelo galleguense.
Un Comité Pro Aviación formado en Punta Arenas y otro en formación en Río Gallegos, buscaban conjuntamente con el apoyo del Gobierno de Santa Cruz, establecer una línea de correo y carga entre ambas ciudades.Los tripulantes personificaron el espíritu aventurero y romántico de la época y, más allá de posibles réditos perso¬nales, portaron el valor como estandarte, tras el horizonte infinito como meta, quizás impulsados por la seducción que experimentan sólo los poseídos por el inefable sentimiento de libertad
SVA 6 A Ansaldo
On 29 May 1921, at 11 hours and 35 minutes, a bi-plane took off from the Punta Arenas horse-riding club, setting out on a flight scheduled to reach the city of Río Gallegos.
The machine was an Italian made SVA 6 A Ansaldo, with a wooden framed construction covered in cloth. It was equipped with a 200 HP engine and could reach a máximum speed of 200km/hr.
It was piloted by Mario Pozzatti, an ex-military pilot from the Italian army, and Osear Friedly, also a pilot, serving as mechanic.
The chronicles of that era tell us that the aircraft, named 'Magallanes', flew over the Strait (of Magellan, after which it was named) as far as San Gregorio (still in Chile), then headed inland towards Section Frailes (on estancia 'Cóndor', just into Argentine territory) and finally, after a flight lasting 1 hour and 44 minutes, it became the first plañe to land on the soil of Río Gallegos.
A Pro Aviation committee formed in Punta Arenas and another being formed in Río Gallegos, were jointly seeking, with the support of the Government of Santa Cruz, to establish a mail and freight airline between the two cities.
The crew personified the romantic adventurous spirit of that era, and beyond any possible personal interest, they ñew the flag of valour, towards the infinite horizon as a goal, perhaps driven by the seduction only experienced by those possessed by that ineffable sense of freedom.
