El Pioneer por antonnomasia

Andreas Madsen (1881-1965).

Nació en Jutlandia (Dinamarca). Desde temprana edad conoció la pobreza, y tuvo que librar una lucha constante por su subsistencia, lo que templó su espíritu para emprender más tarde una vida de aventura rayana en la leyenda.
El mar le brindó la posibilidad de escapar de esa niñez mezquina y satisfacer su insaciable sed de transitar el mundo hasta los más ignotos confines, y ya a los 18 años era reconocido como experto timonel.
En Buenos Aires, a comienzo del siglo XX, su condición de marino le facilitó el ingreso a la Comisión de Límites argentino-chileno emprendiendo numerosos viajes por mar y por tierra hacia los Andes patagónicos y los lagos santa-cruceños.
Navegante, carretero, constructor, cazador, explorador infatigable, buscador de oro, ovejero y estanciero; recorrió valles, vadeó ríos y surcó lagos, escaló montañas, soportó nevadas colosales hasta la extenuación.
Gran lector, dejó testimonio de su vida aventurera en bellos libros, como "La Patagonia vieja" y "Cazando pumas en la Patagonia".
Pocos como Madsen amaron tanto la vida y sus criaturas, en ese habitat libre y salvaje, tan cercano a lo sublime, enfrentando el devenir con pensamientos como este: "Si la mano de Dios tomas por guía, verás cuan fácil te será la senda".
Madsen, el legendario, dejo su mundo de sueños y aventuras, falleciendo en Bariloche a la edad de 84 años, pero su infatigable espíritu rondará por siempre los nevados picos del Fitz Roy.



The self-styled pioneer

Andreas Madsen (1881-1965)
Born in Jutlandia (Denmark), he knew poverty from an early age and had to engage in a constant struggle for subsistence, which tempered his spirit so that later in life he took up a Ufe of adventure bordering on the legendary.
The sea offered him the chance to escape that wretched childhood, satisfying his insatiable thirst to travel to the uttermost ends of the earth. Already at the age of 18 he was recognised as an expert helmsman.
In Buenos Aires, at the beginning of the 20th century, being a seaman assisted his entry to the Argentine-Chüean Border Commission, undertaking numerous voyages by sea and expeditions by land to the Patagonian Andes and lakes of what is now Santa Cruz province.
Seaman, waggoner, builder, hunter, tireless explorer, gold prospector, sheep breeder and estancia owner; he travelled the length of valleys, fording rivers and crossing lakes, climbing mountains and withstanding colossal snowstorms to the point of exhaustion.
A great reader, he left a testimony of his life as an adventurer in wonderful books such as "La Patagonia Vieja"1 and "Cazando Pumas en la Patagonia"2.
Few loved, as Madsen did, life and its creatures in that wild free habitat, so cióse to the sublime, facing whatever happened with thoughts such as this: "If you take the hand of God as your guide, you will see how easy the way is."
The legendary Madsen departed his world of dreams and adventures, dying in Bariloche at the age of 84, but his indefatigable spirit will always linger around the snowy peaks of Mt. Fitz Roy, El Chaltén.
