El maestro fotógrafo
Walter Roil (1904-1989).
Nació en Freiburg (Alemania). Llegó por primera vez a la Patagonia en 1926, recalando en Comodoro Rivadavia. La soledad lo hizo volver a su país, donde contrajo matrimonio con Hedwig Krug. De regreso en Argentina, abrió su tienda de fotografía en Río Gallegos, en 1934.
Don Walter fue un espíritu exquisito, amante de la música y de las bellezas naturales. Se convirtió en el fotógrafo por excelencia y endulzó la polvorienta vida de los riogalleguenses por más de cinco décadas, con su notable y bellísima producción. Sü obra es iniciadora del archivo fotográfico más importante de Santa Cruz y quizás de la Patagonia toda.
Su vena artística se prolongó en su hijo y sus nietos, que han seguido sus pasos.
La vida sencilla y ejemplar de Don Walter configuran un hito que no olvidarán sus descendientes ni quienes tuvieron el privilegio de disfrutar su amistad.

Walter Roil (1904-1989)
Born in Freiburg (Germany), he arrived in Patagonia for the first time in 1926, landing at Comodoro Rivadavia. Loneliness made him retum to his own country, where he married Hedwig Krug. Back in Argentina, he opened his photography shop in Río Gallegos in 1934.
Don Walter was a highly sensitive spirit, a lover of music and the beauties of nature. He became a photographer par excellence and sweetened the dusty Ufe of the people of Río Gallegos for over five decades with his outstandingly beautiful photography. His work has initiated the most important photographic archive of Santa Cruz and perhaps the whole of Patagonia.
His artistic vein has continued in his children and grandchildren, who have followed in his footsteps. Don Walter's simple and exemplary Ufe is a landmark that neither his descendants ñor those who had the privilege of enjoying his friendship will ever forget.
